Don’t be put off by the title of this memoir. Call the Midwife by Jennifer Worth is not just a book about childbirth. It is an inspiring story of women and men in and around London's East End Docklands in the 1950’s. Although filled with stories of poverty and ignorance it is also uplifting and surprisingly humorous in places as well.
Along with Catherine Hamlin's Hospital by the river, this is an inspiring, thought provoking read. A really great book and I am looking forward to reading the follow on titles, In the Shadow of the Workhouse and Farewell to the East End.
